Blockchain Steps onto the Field: A New Era for Trust, Time, and Data

Blockchain is often described as a decentralized ledger, but for sports it may become the ultimate record book. In 2026, I watched Dutee Chand run 11.22 seconds in an almost empty Kalinga Stadium; that silence taught me that even stillness has a split time. Records matter only when proof survives. From football's offside lines to athletics photo finishes, data is everywhere but controlled by a few. Blockchain can make those records immutable. It can help transfer markets by making loan-with-obligation clauses transparent, protect smaller clubs, and create honest esports prize records. But technology is not magic; code is written by humans. If smart contracts contain errors or ignore privacy, the immutable ledger can become a trap. In emerging sports markets like India and Bangladesh, infrastructure and local trust matter more than hype. I was there when the clock first learned to fly; the question now is who will own that clock. Blockchain can keep history honest, but only communities can keep trust alive.
